Wrestling is sad

Posted by celebrity1on1 on December 19, 2009

My sister had a theory when she was young. “If if was on T.V. it was real.” That theory encompassed everything. As long as it was broadcast over the magic box that brought pretty pictures into her home there was no doubt in her mind that it was genuine. I often laughed at her over this citing that cartoons were on T.V. but they were by no means real but she still held her belief. Our father teased her about it as well which I found to be quite humorous until he began to direct his teasing to me as well because I believed professional wrestling was real.

For someone to tell me that my beloved sport of wrestling was fake disturbed me greatly. In an attempt to prove that my wrestling was real I searched for a way to prove it. When all my arguments failed to sway his opinion I had to take drastic measures. In a last attempt to prove the “realness” of wrestling I made my stand.

During dinner one night the subject came up again giving me the opportunity to try out my plan. I set my fork on my plate and calmly, yet with great effort, placed my version of Fritz Von Erich’s iron claw upon my little sister’s head. What followed was my sister screaming in pain as she launched peas across the room and my mother showing me her version of the basic slap across my head. I released my claw as my mother began to tell me how horrible of a thing I had just done. I will never forget her words to me as she sent me to my room…..? you could have popped her eyes out squeezing her temples like that … what is wrong with you…do you want to kill her or something…?

I spent the next few hours in my room. I had been directed by my mother to think about what I had done and the possible consequences of my action. I spent the next few hours in my room but all I thought about was how I had finally proved that professional wrestling was in fact real. After all…I almost popped my sister’s eyeballs out at the dinner table.

Well, needless to say the future dinner conversations never again included a debate on what was real and what was not. I had won that arguement. I dont think my dad ever believed me but at least he didn’t dispute it anymore.

Now, as an adult, I watch wrestling with my children. They, as I was, are convinced it is real. Some things about wrestling have really changed though. Either the misses don’t seem so obvious as a child or wrestling truely was more real back then. As I watch the wrestling of today I can’t help but to wonder how anyone could believe it to be real. When a kick is missed by a few feet but the victim still falls in pain it kinda ruins it. I remember back in the good old days when everyone started to wonder if maybe wrestling could be real. I have seen steel cage doors get slammed on people’s heads, I have seen ring ropes wrapped in barbed wire (and that was a sanctioned match) and many other things wrestlers refuse to do today…except for Mick Foley.

Which brings me to my point…yes finally a point. The greatest wrestler in the sport today is , without exception, Mick Foley. This guy sacrifices his mind, body and soul for the entertainment of the fans. I don’t watch him wrestle and think about how fake it looks. Most of the time, I watch his matches and think to myself “Damn that’s gotta hurt!”. Who else in the history of wrestling has done what he has? To my knowledge the answer is no one. Getting dumped through the top of a steel cage, sledgehammers and dumpsters. That is Mick Foley.

The last time I saw him wrestle in person the guy was wearing boxer shorts with a shirt and tie in the ring. There is no limit for him. He does what it takes and more to put on a good show. Im ready to see more wrestlers with this attitude in the WWF and WCW. Make it a good show not something we roll our eyes at. You guys get paid good money to get your butts kicked or to kick butt. We deserve more effort. Not everyone has to go to the length of Foley but at least make contact with your opponent. If you miss then don’t pretend you didn’t.

I’m not saying you have to literally kick the crap out of someone, just make it look like you did. I’m also not saying Foley is the only wrestler who really gives one hundred percent. There are a few others. Like Cactus Jack, Dude Love and my favorite….Mankind……….

Cool site also
Another great one

Public Enemies

Posted by celebrity1on1 on July 3, 2009

What a fine collection of talent in Public Enemies. I had so much doubt in anticipation of this movie. I was told that the camera quality was low, Bale’s acting was bad and that the plot was confusing and did not explain anything. After Miami Vice, I was willing to believe this might be another let down. Right in the first act, I knew that this movie was the one I have been waiting for.

The last wave of decent crime films was in the first half of the 90′s with Heat, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and Casino. Since then, I have been waiting for more cinematically well- crafted crime dramas. The ones that were expected to be comparable to the older films I think did not reach that level, such as American Gangster. I would say Eastern Promises, Gangs of New York, Road to Perdition, Collateral and The Departed came close, but they are more just good movies of their own.

Public Enemies is the first film in my opinion to have captured the essence of crime drama in a long time. It jumps right into the era, without the explanation that some people wished to have had. We enter right into the world, learning quickly the interactions between Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Frank Nitty, and much more of the criminal society of the Depression. I’ve always loved seeing these characters portrayed in the other movies they are featured in, but this film really had them right.

Michael Mann really exercised himself as an auteur on this outing. Many can criticize his style and decision to shoot HD. Still, artists can paint the crucifixion of Christ in many different ways, so Mann should have the right to explore the story in his own fashion as well. I personally thought the imagery was fantastic, most especially the opening act.

Depp, Bale and Cotillard were all great. So was the rest of the cast. Great balance between tragedy and humor. Go see this movie in theaters or you will regret it. It’s quite simply the coolest movie of 2009.

The Hangover – 2009

Posted by celebrity1on1 on July 3, 2009

Absolutely loved this movie. The theatre was all laughs through the whole movie. Don’t go expecting a cinematic masterpiece but if you are looking for out of control laughter this is your flick. The story was funny the acting was hilarious and I don’t want to spoil it but the end was so funny my wife hurt her ribs (no I’m not kidding) from laughing so hard.

I am going back to see this movie again. And I don’t do that often, but for any guy with a sense of humour or has ever been to a bachelor party (or can’t wait to go to a rockin’ bachelor party) this is a must see movie.

Year One – Trailer

Posted by celebrity1on1 on July 3, 2009

This was an extremely funny movie and had great gags, hilarious references to Biblical history, and much more! Jack Black was incredibly funny as a lazy hunter named Zed, and Michael Cera plays his friend who is a gatherer named Oh. When Zed is caught eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, he is banished from the tribe, but Oh decides to join him. They run into Cain and Able, meet Abraham, who is fixing to kill his son Isaac, stop Maya and Eema from becoming slaves, and much more! If you are a hardcore Christian, you may not like this movie, but it’s all in good fun! I highly recommend YEAR ONE!!!

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen & Megan Fox

Posted by celebrity1on1 on July 3, 2009

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen – The Movie

We all have a feeling of dread when we heard of a sequel going into production when referring to a movie that we enjoyed. Especially if that movie is based on something left over from our childhood. While the first Transformer movie was enjoyable, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen exceeded all of the expectations I could have possibly had while all the while blowing the first movie out of the water.

Shia LaBeouf turns in a finely tuned performance that exemplifies his growth from child star to emerging actor. Josh Duhamel returns as Lennox as a side character with his own plot that quickly steals the scene. Megan Fox was the only low spot in the cast, highlighted mostly in action scene involving little dialogue and a lot of bounce. The special effects were amazing and the exotic locales were excellent as the journey takes the viewer on a whirlwind tour of both the world and human history. Michael Bay pulled no punches in the witty banter involving the giant robots and their human counterparts. The plot though stretched at times was credible in the overall action of the story. Clearly audiences know better than to go to a Michael Bay film if they want an Academy Award winning performance.

All in all, this movie was not to be missed. It will be one of the hardest movies to beat this summer in the action department as young adults and adults alike will enjoy the action, drama, romance and scenery.

Ice Age 3 : Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Posted by celebrity1on1 on July 3, 2009

It’s all about family in essence. Starting one, keeping one, becoming one, protecting one. A family film about family is always going to ring the right bells (unless Eddie Murphys in it), and this is no exception! It’s funny, its sharp, it’s clever, and when it wants too will tug on your heart strings. It’s everything a great family film should be. It has just as much humour to keep the grown ups happy as it does the kids.
A fantastic new addition to the franchise is “Buck” (Simon Pegg) a looney tune hermit possum who joins the herd around half way through. When he enters the scene, the whole movie shifts up a gear! Some of the stuff he comes out with will have you rolling in the isle! If you have the chance, you must see it in 3D! It’s amazing how this new version of such an old and dated technology can suck you even deeper into a film! The chases are more exciting, the locations more real, it works so well! And it doesn’t give you a migraine!

Overall – Like a franchise should, Ice Age gets better and better and better! If you liked the first, you’ll love the second! If you loved the second, you’ll go crazy for the third! 2D – 9/10 3D – 10/10
